Association of Evangelicals in Africa’s Statement on Zimbabwe Presidential elections

General May 10, 2008

For Immediate Release

10 May 2008

Nairobi - The Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA) welcomes the commitment of both Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) to participate in the presidential run-off elections. Speaking from Johannesburg, the President of AEA, Rev Ndaba Mazabane, said: “The earlier acceptance of the parliamentary election results by parties, albeit they were delayed and caused the prevailing crisis, was commendable. The concession of defeat by President Mugabe is an encouraging sign of hope for the future of this troubled nation. Yes, we noted with great relief, the relative peaceful way elections ended on the 29th March despite the fact that the opposition parties did not enjoy a levelled playground of contestation. But the recent reports of violence against innocent people, the torture and intimidation of opposition party members, are a great concern for all of us.” He concluded by saying: “Now it is our hope that the government of Zimbabwe will curtail violence and mayhem, and prepare for a credible and democratic election.”

AEA also call on the Zimbabwe government to allow for free press, media coverage of elections and the involvement of local, regional and international observers. We plead for African States to assist Zimbabwe financially and in every way possible.
