Christian employee attacked in Orissa, India

General August 1, 2008

Boloy Kumar Baraik, working with Sunshine Mission School was allegedly assaulted by Hindutva fundamentalists in Badrak town, in Orissa.

Mr. Baraik, told CLA that on July 26th he was called to the Principal’s office Prof. Dr. Debendra Rout. Behind close door the member of the managing Committee one Utpal Nayak, assaulted and pressurized Mr. Baraik to resign from the school.

Mr. Baraik was taken to the hospital and was diagnosed with severe ear injuries. Later with the help of local Christians he went to the Bhadrak town Police station and a case has been lodged against the radicals under Section 341/323/294 & 506 of the Indian Penal Code. The FIR no. is 188/08. So far no action has been taken against the culprits.

Sunshine Mission School, was founded by the American Baptist Mission. But the Christian Community being minuscule in number, the administration was snatched from then Christian Service Society and a local administration was appointed with muscle and political power of Mr. Utpal Nayak. Now the main motive of the authorities is to remove all the Christian staff working for the school.

EFI request your prayers for the speedy recovery of the victim and for the government administration in Orissa to be sensitive towards the minorities in the State.
