EAC Conducting Research Among Youth

General April 19, 2009

EAC is moving ahead with its research project on the sexual practices of youth attending Evangelical churches in the Caribbean. With funding from UNICEF, the research is proceeding in Antigua, St. Lucia and St. Vincent. The collection of data is expected to be completed this month and the analysis done during May. The reports for these three countries should be completed by the end of June. The pilot project was done in Barbados and that report can be downloaded from EAC’s website: www.caribbeanevangelical.org/pdfs/sexsurvey.pdf

Michelle Sewsankar of the Church of God of Prophecy, Cooks Hill, Antigua reports: “We did our survey last Friday (March 27). It was wonderful. We thought it best to invite the parents of our youth so that they could be au fait with the content of the lecture given by the doctor whom we invited to speak. It was an extremely informative session for both youth and their parents. You would be amazed at the questions which were asked. We all learned from the exercise. Thank you for introducing the subject. We are now more aware of the HIV/AIDS virus. We were also taught about herpes. UGH!!! Horrible stuff! We truly enjoyed same and have already submitted our forms to the Street Pastors’ office.” The Street Pastors’ office in St. John’s is the collection point in Antigua for the completed forms.

While in The Bahamas in March Bishop Gerry Seale, EAC’s General Secretary, met with a number of pastors to discuss the possibility of doing the survey there. Pastors were very receptive of the idea and three churches are considering covering the cost of the research in that country.

Possibilities are also being explored of having the research done in Curaçao, Trinidad, Grenada and Guyana.

According to Bishop Seale the research results will be used as the basis for convening a major regional conference on sexuality for Evangelical pastors and youth leaders in 2010. That conference is being designed to equip leaders in more effectively handling the issues surrounding sexuality including HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.
