Italy: Micah Challenge and Evangelical Engagement at the G8

General July 11, 2009

"Emergency" is a word that resounds loudly and often in the lands where earthquakes hit. In the Abruzzo region, after the terrible earthquake in early April, life there moved into emergency mode. But similarly, the world at large is in a state of emergency, a different kind of emergency where global poverty is devastating lives and continues to broaden its grip. Now is the time to reverse the tide and to approach this global emergency with emergency type measures. And evangelicals are in the forefront of this process.

This was the focus of the meeting held in the city of L'Aquila on 7th July.
At the eve of the G8 meetings, as world leaders were still on their way to the Summit, the Italian Evangelical Alliance and Coevema (a relief agency created after the earthquake) convened a meeting of a number of relief and development Christian organizations working nationally and internationally. The Micah Challenge campaign set the framework for the gathering with emphasis on the Millennium Development Goals. More than 20 agencies participated at this historic meeting. A document was signed by all participants and sent to the G8 Summit and media agencies. The document reminded countries that signed the MDG agreement of their commitment and underscored the lack of significant results so far. It appealed to governments to do more than just offer temporary solutions but to develop long-term and sustainable solutions to eradicate extreme poverty.  It called for reform in global economic and political policies that would bring about true justice and peace to societies.  It also highlighted Evangelicals' commitment to seek transformation of the whole of world and their willingness to work together with those who care about doing something to address the global emergency of extreme poverty.

Evangelicals are good news people who cannot separate their restored relationship with God through Jesus Christ and their responsibility to the world.
