Micah Challenge Prayer & Reflection, April 18, 2008

Prayer April 18, 2008

Thank you for sharing and praying with the worldwide Micah Challenge community. We hope this email is challenging, inspiring and spurs us on!

Please note: The next prayer email will be sent on Friday 9 May 2008. Thank you for your understanding.

Reflection

Our reflection this week is a song, to the tune of ‘What a friend we have in Jesus’, that focuses around life in a city and how we can worship God in the middle of it. We can offer God our workplaces, cultures, homes and, ultimately, our worship.

‘Lord, we offer you our city, Tow’ring buildings concrete sprawl.Traffic flowing, roaring, noisy, You are Lord above it all.Let us come to meet each other,In the city’s crowded life.Offering you our busy places,You who see the city’s strife.’

We can see in the ministry of the apostle Paul, the importance of large cities with their wide reach to a large group of people from diverse backgrounds. In Acts 18:9-11 we read of God’s encouragement to Paul to continue his work in Corinth, despite all the challenges he faced.

Prayer

Let us pray:

We pray for the strengthening of the capacity of local authorities and civil society so that people can live in a safe environment.

We pray for effective measures for urban crime prevention and good police and justice systems.

Meditate on the Statistics

As you spend time in prayer and reflection, you may like to take a moment to silently understand with your heart the focus statistic we include each week (see below). Our hope is that you will find this series of statistics a useful resource in preparing presentations.

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability

Target 11: By 2020, to have achieved a significant improvement in the lives of at least 100 million slum dwellers

‘The number of slum dwellers keeps on increasing. An estimated 35 million people, approximately the population of Kenya, are becoming slum dwellers every year. Unless Millennium Development Goal 7 target 11 … is achieved, the number of slum dwellers is projected to reach 1,392 million by 2020.
