EGYPT

An Egyptian man's long journey to Christianity and his legal battle to have his Egyptian identity card display his
Christian faith comes amid death threats from his family. 'The presence of a religion field on ID papers has been
highly criticised by the New York-based Human Rights Watch as being at the root of discrimination against converts to Christianity and members of religious minorities.'

AFP reports that Egyptian police have used violence to prevent Christians from repairing their church. Rumours spread that the Christians had fought back against a policeman, 'leading to the brief arrests of several Copts and to threats of retaliation from Muslim villagers' a human rights group said.

The Times of India reports that in Jawahar, approximately 180 km from Mumbai, a Christian man was murdered for converting to Christianity and his death was masqueraded as a suicide. Hindu fundamentalist leader Swami Laxanananda Saraswati was killed on 23 August. The Hindutva are accusing Christians of the murder, despite evidence that suggests Maoists are responsible. See WEA RLC's RLP 493 for an analysis of the situation in Orissa, India. Asia News provides an overview of the Christians harmed and property destroyed.
