The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada’s Religious Liberty Commission (EFC RLC) today released a report detailing recent religious freedom developments in Vietnam. Entitled Not What You See: A Report on the Religious Liberty Situation of Protestant Believers in Vietnam the 11-page document includes a summary of recent developments, and details a recent visit to Vietnam sharing stories from those who have first hand suffered from religious persecution.

The report discusses the impact of the 2004 / 2005 religion legislation that initially gave hope to Christians in Vietnam, but now appears to be more smoke and mirrors than helpful legislation. With verified testimony, the report shows how government officials are finding creative means to hinder efforts of many house churches trying to cooperate with the new legislation.

In hopes of improving the relationship between Vietnamese authorities and Protestants, the report makes recommendations, which if applied, could bring the freedom Christian believers in Vietnam so desperately pray for.

The report builds on previous EFC RLC reports that have provided updates on the state of religious freedom in Vietnam.

“This report indicates that a situation which appeared to be steadily improving has not made the progress either Vietnamese Christians or those of us looking on had hoped for,” notes Don Hutchinson, chair of the EFC RLC. “There are still issues of concern and a need for continued advocacy on this issue before Vietnam’s Protestant Christians and other faith minorities experience full freedom of religion.
