World Evangelical Alliance Renews Call for Prayer for North Korea

General November 7, 2006

Representatives for the World Evangelical Alliance called on its constituents to continue praying for the situation in North Korea and for Christian believers facing greater hardships over the new economic sanctions prompted by Pyongyang ’s nuclear weapons program.

“We stand in prayer with our brothers and sisters on the Korean Peninsula at this difficult time,” said Geoff Tunnicliffe, the International Director of the World Evangelical Alliance. “We recognize that this is a dangerous moment not only for North and South Korea, but for all nations in the world.”

The renewed call for prayers came as Senior US diplomats traveled to Asia on Sunday to prepare for the resumed six-party negotiations with North Korea aimed at ending Pyongyang ’s nuclear program.

North Korea agreed to return to the multi-lateral disarmament negotiations under pressure from sanctions imposed after the communist nation carried out its first nuclear test explosion on Oct. 9.

In light of the opportunity that opened for dialogue, Tunnicliffe urged governments to search for peace and encouraged Christians to pray.

“We call on all governments involved to find a peaceful political solution to end the potential threat of violence,” said Tunnicliffe. “We call on all Christians to make this situation a matter of intense prayer.”
