EVANGELICAL WORLD MOURNS JOHN STOTT

Many throughout the evangelical world will mourn and cherish the memories of Dr. John Stott who passed away on July 27. Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe, secretary general of the World Evangelical Alliance, of which the EFC is a member, was personally impacted by his teachings. The Globe and Mail calls him “one of the giants of the Christian faith” in their summary of his life and ministry.

EFC LEGAL COUNSEL PROFILED IN CHRISTIAN WEEK
EFC Legal Counsel Faye Sonier was profiled in this month’s edition of ChristianWeek as part of the series Focus on Leaders and Learning. In the article she talks about work at the EFC and her personal life.

EFC PARTNERSHIP MANIFESTO STILL RELEVANT

The Street Level Roundtable's Ottawa Manifesto is a call and commitment to a shared vision of Canada in which no person is denied the reality of a “home". First presented by the Roundtable (a partnership operating on the EFC's administrative and communications platform) in 2006, it continues to resonate with those who are calling the nation to place a high priority on addressing issues of poverty and homelessness.

EFC COMMENTS ON HERITAGE CHURCHES

With Ontario law taking decisions about historic churches out of the hands of many congregations, the EFC commented and made submission on proposed guidelines under the Ontario Heritage Act. Read about it in Christian Week.

EFC INVOLVED IN ONTARIO HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CONVERSATION

EFC VP Don Hutchinson will be a participant in a conversation hosted by the Ontario Human Rights Commission to discuss balancing of competing human rights in a diverse culture. The full day meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 3.

OUR CONGREGATION JUST HIRED ANOTHER PART TIME PASTOR. IS THAT NORMAL?

Yes. Part-time staffing complements in Canadian evangelical congregations are growing. Read about this staffing trend and more in “Canadian Evangelical Congregational Full-time and Part-time Staffing Complements, 2003-2009” in the July 2011 issue of Church & Faith Trends.

EVANGELICALS RESPOND TO ADOPTION CRISIS IN CANADA

In their current issue Christian Week features EFC President Bruce Clemenger’s family and the ongoing initiatives of Evangelicals in Canada. It highlights adoption education and the current plight of 30,000 children waiting for a “forever” home. Read also about international adoptions in the summer issue of Faith Today – available free online.

STOTT’S CALL TO RADICAL NON-CONFORMITY

While some in mainline churches were challenging the divinity of Jesus Christ, John Stott called Church theologians to bear witness to his full divinity. Read his advice originally published in Fellowship Magazine and a review of Stott’s reasons for becoming a Christian, both posted on Christianity.ca.
