Prayer Focus : The 7 Mountains of Cultural Influence

Now it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the LORD's house

shall be established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills;

and all nations shall flow to it. —ISAIAH 2:2

When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan. — PROVERBS 29:2

There are 7 Cultural Mountains of Greatest Influence

In 1975, Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade, and Loren Cunningham, founder of Youth With a Mission, had lunch together in Colorado. God simultaneously gave each of these change agents a message to give to the other. During that same timeframe, Francis Schaeffer, founder of L'Abri, and Pat Robertson of Regent University and the Christian Broadcasting Network were given a similar messageif we are to impact any nation for Jesus Christ, then we will have to effect the seven spheres, or mountains of society, that are the pillars of any society. These seven mountains are business, government, media, arts and entertainment, education, the family, and religion.

The message of the seven mountains has begun to re-emerge through many leaders worldwide simultaneously, many not knowing one another.  We believe the Holy Spirit is behind this rebirth for this present time as a strategy to influence culture for Jesus Christ.

Prayer and Repentance Focus

MOUNTAIN OF FAMILY – The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy —JOHN 10:10

Pray for families to be strengthened at the foundations and that families will be defined as a husband and wife in the nations. Pray for Godly fathers to lead their families.

MOUNTAIN OF EDUCATION - And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.' This is the first commandment.  - Mark 12:30-31

Pray for Godly educators to be raised up in the schools and colleges in the nations. Pray for God's truth to be upheld. Pray against relativism "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." - Proverbs 14:12. Pray educators will uphold absolute truths.

MOUNTAIN OF BUSINESSAnd whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.- Col 3:23 Pray that men and women will embrace their work as a holy calling from God and to be stewards of their gifts, talents and resources for Kingdom purposes.

MOUNTAIN OF MEDIA - How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news,

who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation … Isa 52:7

Pray for those in the media to see themselves as bearers of truth and righteousness.

MOUNTAIN OF ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT – Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. -- Gen 2:3 Pray for artists and those in entertainment to acknowledge that God is the source of creativity and to represent His creativity in what they do and how they do it.

MOUNTAIN OF GOVERNMENT - For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. -- Isa 9:6 Pray for God to raise up new leaders who do not pander to special interest, public opinion and can represent God's government of righteousness, justice and mercy based on absolute truth.

MOUNTAIN OF RELIGION (THE CHURCH) - And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry …" Eph 4:11-12 Pray that our church leaders and pastors see that their primary role is to equip the saints for the work of the ministry in the places where they spend most of their time – their vocations. Pray for a mature bride that will become spotless. "If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land." —2 Chronicles 7:14

More Salvations Does Not Result in a Changed Culture.

The evangelical church has operated on a flawed premise as to what will impact our cultures spiritually. We have held a view that says the more people we win to Christ the more spiritual the culture will become. This has not proven true. Several countries can boast a large percentage of their population being followers of Christ, but these same nations are losing the cultural war. That is because culture is defined by a relatively small number of change agents who operate at the tops of these cultural mountains.

Research reveals that it takes less than 3–5 percent of those operating at the tops of a cultural mountain to actually shift the values represented on that mountain. This is exactly what the gay rights movement has done in the U.S. through the mountain of media and arts and entertainment which  has allowed this message to become legitimized through the use of two cultural mountains. A high ranking media professional from one of the top 3 TV networks revealed that less than 100 people control the entire media in America.  Those at the tops of these mountains are expressing a worldview which results in influence for their worldview which is often contrary to God's view. The more liberal and ungodly the change agents at the top, the more liberal and ungodly the culture. The more godly the change agent at the top, the more righteous the culture will be. It doesn't matter if the majority of the culture is made up of Christians. It only matters who has the greatest influence over that cultural mountain.
