The Secretary General of WEA informs himself on the threat of nuclear weapons through global expert Jonathan Granoff [October 2021]

In Lindau, Germany, Thomas Schirrmacher discussed with Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, the threat of nuclear weapons and the need to ban all nuclear weapons. Granoff is a leading expert on nuclear disarmament and speaks for a group of leaders wanting to reach out to WEA on nuclear disarmament including Ambassador Robert T. Grey, Jr., the former US Representative to the Conference on Disarmament from 1998-2001, who worked around the topic for the State department of the USA since 1960 (!), Alyn Ware is the Global Coordinator of Parliamentarians for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament, and Ambassador (Ret.) Thomas Graham, Jr., who served as a senior U.S. diplomat involved in the negotiation of every major international arms control and non-proliferation agreement for the past 30 years, including The Strategic Arms Limitations Talks (SALT) Treaties, The Strategic Arms Reduction Talks (START) Treaties, The Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty, Intermediate Nuclear Force (INF) Treaty, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE) Treaty, and Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) (https://gsinstitute.org/who-we-are/)

Together Granoff and Schirrmacher formulated a letter to the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany, even though both have not been appointed finally yet. The letters will be send, once the two positions have been decided on by the incoming new government of Germany. (Update: the two letters were sent December 30, 2021.)

Jonathan Granoff, President of the Global Security Institute, is an attorney, author and international advocate emphasizing the legal and ethical dimensions of human development and security, with a specific focus on advancing the rule of law to address international security and the threats posed by nuclear weapons. He serves on numerous governing and advisory boards including: the Nonpartisan Security Group,  Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy, Fortune Forum, Jane Goodall Institute, the NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security, Parliamentarians for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament, and Middle Powers Initiative. He is the recipient of the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award of the American Bar Association International Law Section, the Rutgers University School of Law’s Arthur E. Armitage Distinguished Alumni Award and a 2014 nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is a Fellow and Trustee of the World Academy of Arts and Science. 
He is the Senior Advisor and Representative to the United Nations of the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summits of Nobel Peace Laureates, Ambassador for Peace, Security and Nuclear Disarmament of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, former Adjunct Professor of International Law at Widener University School of Law, and Chair of the Task Force on Nuclear Non-proliferation and  Senior Advisor to the Committee on National Security of the International Law Section of the American Bar Association. Mr. Granoff is the award-winning screenwriter of The Constitution: The Document that Gave Birth to a Nation and a prolific author. He has been a featured guest and expert commentator on numerous radio and television programs, and has presented expert testimony in the Parliaments of Canada and the United Kingdom as well as the US Congress and the United Nations. Mr. Granoff earned his BA (cum laude) from Vassar College and his Juris Doctorate from Rutgers University School of Law.
