For those who claim Jesus as Lord, we should not be surprised that Holy Week has been characterized by dramatic events. Sisters and brothers killed in church bombings while children parade carrying palm branches; small and large communities gathered to wash one another’s feet and to share a meal; sadness and gloom as we recall our Saviour’s final words; the silence of Holy Saturday. On Easter Sunday the sadness of those who grieve the loss of loved ones will not be gone, but a greater hope is given to all through the resurrection.

This year we cry with those who mourn even as we marvel and rejoice as did the women at the empty tomb. Echoing the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Philippians 1:21, an Egyptian Bishop said this week: “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord.”

May the witness of those who live and die for the Lord remind us to be the Church that God wants us to be and to live in such a way that the world may know the hope and the joy of the resurrection.

On behalf of all in the World Evangelical Alliance I wish you a blessed and happy Easter!
