Micah Challenge

Prayer and Reflection

Thank you for sharing and praying with the worldwide Micah Challenge community. We hope this email is challenging, inspiring and spurs us on!

This week you are invited to reflect on art works created by Australian artists who participated in 'Create to Advocate 07', which was launched by Micah Challenge Australia.

Artists were encouraged to express their vision for a world where poverty is history and to interpret and speak out on the themes of the Millennium Development Goals.

Our bible reflection is from Exodus 35: 30 – 36: 1 where artists are specifically chosen because of their spirit-given ability to create artistic designs to praise God.

This week's reflection: Create to Advocate

Let us pray:

§ For artists who use their skills to praise God and raise awareness of social justice issues.

§ We give thanks for the safe trip of Micah Challenge US students to Sierra Leone where they had the opportunity to participate with Sierra Leoneans as election observers.

o Please pray for Sierra Leone and especially the present elections. Please pray for peace after the first round of elections and also in the run-up to and during the second round of the elections in early September.

o Please pray for the US students now they are back home again, digesting their experiences and sharing them with their churches and fellow college students.

A blog was written during their time in Freetown and can be found at http://micahchallengeexchange.blogspot.com/search/label/Blog

§ Reflecting on the recent statistic below:

We pray to the Creator of heaven and earth,

And give thanks for all the efforts that governments, institutions and organisations are making to protect and conserve habitats and manage eco systems and pray for continued inspiration to continue with those efforts.

We pray for consideration and respect to take precedence over greed in the various industries that use natural resources.

We pray for God's mercy on our land and water.

Meditate on the Statistics

As you spend time in prayer and reflection, you may like to take a moment to silently understand with your heart the focus statistic we include each week (see below). Our hope is that you will find this series of statistics a useful resource in preparing presentations.

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability

Target 9: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes and reverse the loss of environmental resources

'Even though more areas are being protected, the proportion of species threatened with extinction continues to increase, and individual populations continue to decline. Unprecedented efforts will be required to conserve habitats and to manage ecosystems and species in a sustainable way if the rate of species loss is to be significantly reduced by 2010.

The world’s fisheries are at particular risk, and will require continued international cooperation and management to maintain current stocks and to allow depleted ones to recover.….Currently, only 22 per cent of the world’s fisheries are sustainable, compared to 40 per cent in 1975.'
