National United Christian Forum (NUCF) appeals to the Christians across India to support the relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of churches and homes damaged in Orissa in the wake of the worst ever communal riots against Christians.

Over 50,000 people have been displaced, over 4000 homes destroyed and 20 Christians killed. Beside, the police were mere bystanders as the rioters’ rampaged village after village. Thousands of Christians have fled their villages and some 13,000 people are now living in nine relief camps at Chakapad, Tikabali, G. Udaygiri, Raikia, Baliguda, K.Nuagoan and Phiringia. About 200 villages have been affected by the organized attacks and hundreds of churches including house churches have been burnt down.

We also request that Sunday, September 7 2008 as a Day of Prayer and Fasting and we hope that all our dioceses, our churches, parish communities and all church institutions/organizations will hold prayer services and memorial gatherings on this day, highlighting the need for our solidarity with all the victims and pray for all our missionaries in India, who are facing most trying and difficult times for the sake of the Gospel.

We request our dioceses, our churches, parish communities and all church institutions/organizations to take a freewill offering for the victims on Sunday, September 7, and 14, 2008 which will go towards the relief, rehabilitation of the victims and reconstruction of the churches and homes. This offering collected will be given to respective parishes or diocese Church heads.
