How will the court rule? This week The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada defended the rights of religious organizations to hire people based on their religious beliefs. For an overview of what this case involved, please see the article, Religious Orientation Before the Ontario Courts, by Don Hutchinson, the EFC’s legal counsel. He says, “This case had nothing to do with sexual orientation, but rather the ability of a recognized religious community to define its own beliefs, practices and standards of membership.” Charles Lewis in his report for the National Post comments, “Religious charitable groups could be forced to choose between abandoning their values, or going out of business if an Ontario Human Rights Tribunal decision is not overturned….”
Internationally, of significant impact is the passing of a man described as one of the world’s great evangelists next in influence only to Billy Graham. Oral Roberts, known as the “man who obeyed God,” died at age 91 in California on Tuesday, December 15. He helped bring spirit-filled charismatic Christianity into the mainstream and pioneered TV evangelism.
On a personal level, seven more “sleeps” and then it’s Christmas morning! Do you need a short, concise description of the meaning of Christmas to share with friends and loved ones? Look up Kieran Beville’s version – an acrostic that says it all!
Another writer, Farnaz Farrokhi, disagrees with “political correctness” that assumes people of other faiths are offended with public celebrations of Christmas. She says many immigrants and visitors come to Canada hoping to experience Canadian culture, including Christmas celebrations, and don’t understand why the Christian faith is not allowed public expression.
Also, as you plan for Christmas this week, remember those who are alone. Rusty Wright points out that Christmas can be difficult for people who have lost loved ones or are on their own. If you find Christmas a tough time, read his suggestions on coping with loneliness at Christmas and help a friend who feels the same.
