In the waning days of Canada’s Olympic glory, we rejoice with athletes who have brought home the Gold, the Silver and the Bronze! Well done! We also say, well done, to the Christian community of Vancouver and the surrounding area that has made us proud, and we rejoice at the example they have been to Christian love and service during these Games.

We also recognize and appreciate the large assignment undertaken by David Wells, the leader in charge of coordinating more than 40 clergy from five major religious traditions at the Olympics. Wells’ “rare multi-faith role at the Games” was certainly, as the Vancouver Sun dubbed it, “beyond belief.”

In all the excitement of the Olympics, Christian organizations have faithfully continued to provide relief to the people of Haiti. Several stories emerged this week.

In January, the United Nations designated The Salvation Army as a “lead agency” for Haiti’s disaster relief work. Since then, the organization has set-up a number of operations including fundraising for 1,000 United Nations approved tents for earthquake survivors. Many survivors, however, are children left parentless. David and Sonya Lock of Stouffville, Ontario, are trying to help. They run two Freedom House orphanages in Haiti. Since the earthquake they’ve doubled their efforts to provide shelter to all orphans brought to them.

Another feel-good story – Wilde, a five-year-old orphaned Haitian boy is now starting a new life in Canada with a new family. Already waiting to be adopted prior to the earthquake, Wilde suddenly was released through an unusual set of circumstances some might say only God could have arranged.

We invite you to enjoy these and other articles on our homepage. Also, as the Olympics wind down, here is a special offering. Prior to the beginning of the Olympics Tom Brokow filmed a lovely six-minute tribute to Canada to introduce the Americans to their northern neighbour. If you have a few minutes, we invite you to enjoy this film – a reminder of the blessings that are ours to live in this beautiful and diverse country.

The Way is Made by Walking: A Pilgrimage Along the Caminode Santiago
by Arthur Paul Boers
Unusual in our day, this author undertakes a 500-mile pilgrimage along a path walked by millions to a Spanish cathedral said to hold the relics of the apostle James. His story of renewed spirituality, community and dependence on God inspires the reader to a deeper personal walk of faith and intimacy with God.
