Dear Friends in Christ,
The World Evangelical Alliance is a global ministry working with local churches around the world to join in common concern to live and proclaim the Good News of Jesus in their communities. God is glorified and the nations of the earth are forever transformed.
The purpose of the WEA Religious Liberty Prayer Release is to keep you informed and mobilized in prayer and intercession for the needs of justice and religious liberty in the Church around the globe, so that we can stand together for the work of the Kingdom and the healing of the Nations. The Prayer Release is comprised on the basis of different credible resources.
Violence against Christians escalates further in SRI LANKA
25 January, Christian persecution in Sri Lanka has intensified during the last couple of months. According to the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL), an all-time high of 103 incidents of persecution were reported in 2013, signifying a 100 percent increase in from 2012.
In a recent incident, on 12 January, a mob led by Buddhist monks, attacked 2 churches in the Southern coastal town of Hikkaduwa. In the attack, the mob, burnt bibles and vandalised church property.
In the month of January alone, 12 incidents of persecution have been reported.
Pray for God’s protection over Christians in Sri Lanka;
Pray that persecuted Christians in Sri Lanka would place their trust in the LORD during this difficult time;
Pray that church leaders in the country would depend on the Holy Spirit to discern appropriate responses to the situation;
Pray that those inciting religious hatred, and persecuting Christians in the country would experience a change in heart, repent, and come to know the saving grace of God.
Church building and 4 Christian homes torched in NEPAL
7 January, According to reports, a church building and 4 Christian homes were torched in Nepal in December 2013.
The attack occurred in the village of Kichet, near the capital, Kathmandu on 23 December 2013.
The church was the first target in the incident followed by the 4 homes of the Christian converts. It is also reported that area residents who tried to stop the attack were beaten up by the group of assailants.
Hindu extremists have been suspected of carrying out the attacks.
Pray that the Christians in Kichet would place their trust in the LORD during this difficult time and seek to respond with Christ-likeness;
Pray that God would enable the Christians in the village to rebuild the church and homes that were damaged in the attack;
Pray for God’s protection over all Christians in the village;
Pray that the gospel would continue to penetrate Nepal.
14 January, It is reported that a church leader in India was killed by 4 men who pretended of wanting to pray with him.
According to reports, the 4 men came to Rev. Sanjeevulu’s home in Andhra Pradesh on 11 January and requested to pray with him. When Rev. Sanjeevulu stepped out of his house, the attackers stabbed him and beat him with sticks and clubs.
Rev. Sanjeevulu succumbed to his injuries on 13 January 2014.
Pray for Jesus' comforting presence upon the family of Rev. Sanjeevulu;
Pray that the family of Rev. Sanjeevulu and all Christian leaders responding to the incident would act in obedience to the Holy Spirit during this difficult time;
Pray that the attackers would be brought to justice.
