Crisis: Our Alliances Responding

The World Evangelical Alliance stands with our brothers and sisters in times of crisis. We are currently monitoring urgent situations in the regions highlighted below. We ask you to click, read, and join us in interceding for these nations. These are not just headlines; they are our family.

Burundi
The Situational Context

Burundi is currently facing an overwhelming humanitarian challenge. Following violent attacks by rebel groups in neighboring DR Congo, a massive wave of refugees—over 100,000 men, women, and children—has fled across the border. They have arrived with almost nothing, and while the government is welcoming them, they cannot meet the desperate need for food, shelter, and medical care alone.

The Local Voice

Pastor Edmund Gakiza, Secretary-General of the Association of Evangelicals in Burundi, shares:
"These families arrive with almost nothing except the hope of safety and the strength to survive. They urgently need emotional support and physical relief."

Please Pray For:
  • The mobilization of resources to provide shelter, clean water, and food.
  • The Association of Evangelicals in Burundi (AEB) as they step up to support these refugees.
  • Peace in the DR Congo and protection for those fleeing violence.
Indonesia
The Situational Context

Tragedy struck Sumatra in December due to severe flash flooding. More than 600 lives have been lost, and vital infrastructure has been washed away. The physical landscape has been altered, and the emotional toll on the surviving community is heavy as they face the daunting task of reconstruction.

The Local Voice

The Fellowship of Indonesia Evangelical Churches and Institutions has issued an urgent call:
"Houses have been severely damaged and need reconstruction, but the immediate need is to comfort those grieving the hundreds of lives lost."

Please Pray For:
  • Comfort and peace for the families grieving the 600+ victims of the floods.
  • Resources to begin the reconstruction of houses and roads in Sumatra.
  • The local churches to be a source of strength and shelter for their neighbors.
Jamaica
The Situational Context

In late 2025, Hurricane Melissa—the strongest recorded hurricane to strike Jamaica—made landfall as a Category 5 storm. The southwestern coast has been devastated by winds and flooding. While the local church is already mobilizing, the destruction of housing and infrastructure requires a long-term recovery strategy.

The Local Voice

Rev. Dr. Alvin Bailey, President of the Jamaica Evangelical Alliance, writes:
"Our island is prone to these storms, but the needs now are persistent. We are looking to the Kingdom for help with food, roofing, and medical supplies to care for our people during this extended recovery period."

Please Pray For:
  • The logistics of warehousing and distributing aid from Kingston and Clarendon.
  • Provision of roofing materials (plastics and metal sheeting) to rebuild homes.
  • Medical supplies for the elderly and disabled, including wheelchairs and beds.
Madagascar
The Situational Context

Madagascar is reeling from the impact of consecutive natural disasters. On February 11, 2026, Intense Tropical Cyclone Gezani made landfall near the major urban center of Toamasina with hurricane-force winds. This strikes a nation already vulnerable from the recent passage of Cyclone Fytia, which had already displaced nearly 27,000 people. The cumulative impact of these back-to-back storms has overwhelmed rural communities, causing widespread flooding, landslides, and the destruction of essential infrastructure like schools and health facilities.

The Local Voice

Rev. Dinah Ratsimbajaona, President of the Indian Ocean Islands Region for the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA), reports:
"This pattern of back-to-back cyclones is stretching community resources to the limit. We are seeing roofs torn from homes and church interiors soaked with water. We urgently request international prayer for the protection of lives across both coastal and inland communities."

Please Pray For:
  • Immediate Safety: For families in flood-prone zones facing the escalating risk of landslides and waterborne diseases.
  • Practical Provision: For the rapid distribution of temporary shelter (tarpaulins) and clean water for the thousands displaced by this double crisis.
  • Restoration: For local pastors and first responders as they work to rehabilitate damaged schools and create safe spaces for children.
Philippines
The Situational Context

Typhoon Kalmaegi (Tino) rapidly intensified before striking the Philippines in November, affecting over 2.4 million people across eight regions. Heavy rainfall and landslides have damaged over 12,000 homes. The devastation is widespread, particularly impacting those who were already marginalized before the storm hit.

The Local Voice

Rosalina R. Handog, President of the Philippine Relief and Development Services (PHILRADS), shares the vision:
"As an expression of compassion and solidarity through Christ, we are prioritizing the most vulnerable—the elderly, persons with disabilities, and indigenous people—beginning with 500 families in Cebu."

Please Pray For:
  • The distribution of hygiene kits and solar lights to families currently without power.
  • Comfort for those who have lost their homes entirely.
  • PHILRADS as they identify and serve the disabled and single-parent households most in need.
South Sudan
The Situational Context

A compound crisis of armed conflict and severe flooding has created a humanitarian emergency. Millions are currently facing acute food insecurity, and widespread displacement is destroying community infrastructure, including schools and hospitals. With funding falling short, the risk to the most vulnerable—particular women and children—is critically high.

The Local Voice

Bishop Arkanjelo Wani Lemi, Secretary General of the Evangelical Alliance of South Sudan, reports:
"Chronic funding shortfalls are severely constraining our efforts. Without sustained support, critical community-based response mechanisms risk collapse, leaving vulnerable populations without access to lifesaving assistance."

Please Pray For:
  • Provision for the 7.56 million people projected to face food insecurity regarding the coming lean season.
  • Safety for the 322,000+ people recently displaced by armed conflict.
  • The Evangelical Alliance of South Sudan (EASS) as they navigate working in flood-affected and insecure areas.
Sri Lanka
The Situational Context

Cyclone "Ditwah" has triggered a nationwide emergency, displacing nearly 200,000 people. While relief is reaching the urban centers, the WEA is deeply concerned for the remote plantation communities in the Central Province. These marginalized groups face disproportionate risks due to landslides and generational poverty, often being last in line for aid.

The Local Voice

Godfrey Yogarajah, CEO of the National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL), states:
"We are specifically aiming to support households in the underserved North, East, and Central Provinces. We must reach the women-headed households and the elderly who have limited mobility and access to aid."

Please Pray For:
  • The families of the 829 people reported dead or missing.
  • The NCEASL’s initiative to provide comprehensive support to 300 of the most vulnerable households.
  • Protection against further landslides in the steep terrain of the plantation areas.
Syria
The Situational Context

The people of Aleppo are once again caught in the crossfire. Renewed fighting between government and Kurdish forces has brought fresh trauma to a region still recovering from the devastating earthquake earlier this decade. The destruction is enormous, and the local Christian community is striving to remain a beacon of hope amidst the rubble.

The Local Voice

Maher Abu Lail, Regional Coordinator of the MENA Evangelical Alliance, urges us:
"The challenges in Aleppo are enormous. We have supported these churches through earthquakes and civil war, and now they need us again. Look at Aleppo with mercy."

Please Pray For:
  • The safety of the seven churches currently operating in the active conflict zone of Aleppo.
  • An immediate cessation of hostilities and protection for civilians.
  • The WEA Crisis Response network as they coordinate relief for specific church communities.
Ukraine
The Situational Context

Ukraine continues to endure the devastating effects of ongoing military aggression. Civilians face constant attacks on critical infrastructure, threatening their ability to stay warm and safe in their homes. Beyond the physical destruction of cities and villages, the social fabric is torn, with families separated, children missing, and religious freedom restricted in occupied territories.

The Local Voice

Dr. Valeriy Antonyuk, President of the Ukrainian Council of Evangelical Protestant Churches, declares:
"We pray and we act. We believe that the spiritual war against the forces of darkness will end with Christ’s victory. Today, protection for our cities is a form of humanitarian aid so people do not freeze."

Please Pray For:
  • Just Peace & Protection: For an end to aggression, the return of safety to the skies, and wisdom for leaders in governance and defense.
  • The Church: For a spiritual awakening and for new ministers to rise up, as many local congregations are currently lacking leadership.
  • The Vulnerable: For the safe return of prisoners and children taken to Russia, and deep comfort for the widows, orphans, and families searching for the missing.
Venezuela
The Situational Context

Venezuela is navigating a period of intense national difficulty. In light of recent events, the church is mobilizing not just for physical aid, but for spiritual warfare. The nation stands at a crossroads, and the Evangelical community is calling for a unified posture of peace and intercession.

The Local Voice

The Board of Directors of the Evangelical Council of Venezuela (CEV) has issued this guidance:
"We reaffirm that the Church is called to be a community of hope. In the midst of uncertainty, gathering to pray is an act of trust in God. We call on all churches to a special week of fasting and prayer for Venezuela."

Please Pray For:
  • The peace, justice, and healing of the nation during this complex time.
  • Pastors to have wisdom as they lead their congregations in prudence and unity.
  • The church in Venezuela to serve as a "light in the midst of the storm."
Zambia
The Situational Context

Zambia is currently battling a dual climate crisis affecting over 600,000 people. While some districts face damaging dry spells, heavy rains have triggered severe flash floods across the Eastern, Southern, and Western provinces. Infrastructure—including homes, bridges, and churches—has been washed away. Of immediate concern is the Lundazi District, where flash floods on December 30th critically compromised the local water supply.

The Local Voice

The leadership of the Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia sends this urgent plea:
"Kindly be in prayer for our people; homes and roads have been washed away. We are currently praying for the safety of lives against waterborne outbreaks in the wake of the destruction."

Please Pray For:
  • Protection against outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases in the flooded regions.
  • The immediate restoration of clean water supplies in the Lundazi District.
  • The 617,515 people currently estimated to be at risk from the combined threats of flooding and drought.
