The WEA joined other world church bodies in calling for prayer for Syria last Saturday. Evangelical friends of the WEA have suggested further extra focused prayer and fasting for the nation, her people, and the whole region on Sunday 15th September. The WEA warmly commends to the whole global Church this further call to prayer.

“I can’t imagine any good outcome for Syria. Pressure to do something to solve the problems is understandable. Christians in the region are strongly against outside military intervention – but what we can do from outside is to pray,” says Gordon Showell-Rogers, Associate Secretary General of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA).

In the words of Dr. Joshua Bogunjoko, International Director of SIM International, a WEA Associate member: “who knows but that God could act in what seems to us an insoluble problem. Our own Christian brothers and sisters in Christ are among those in the cross-fire. Thousands of lives are being lost and many more are wounded, Christians and Muslims. The least we can do is to pray.“

Please pray imaginatively, with compassion and tears for:

  • God’s sovereign intervention, solutions to the insoluble, and an end to the suffering of all the people of Syria
  • The 7 million displaced people, including 2 million refugees outside the country
  • Those ministering to the refugees and Internally Displaced People, including many agencies connected to the WEA through Integral Alliance or the Micah Network
  • Christians, facing particular difficulties, on top of the suffering faced by so many others
