January 12, 2010

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haïti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, about 5:30 p.m. today (January 12). Initial reports indicate the affect has been fairly devastating. Night has now settled over the country and with no electricity available it is a fairly desperate situation. Please pray for the country of Haiti, for the Haitians who are dealing with shock and loss, for the injured and for the first responders who are trying to render some assistance even now in the dark.

Most major Christian NGOs have work in Haïti and will be responding through their Haitian offices and staff. If you can respond financially or in any other way this can be channelled through organisations like World Relief and Tearfund who have ongoing developmental work in Haïti.

The most important response right now is prayer.

Barbados, where I live, is about 1,300 miles south east of Haïti. We have not been affected.
