“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”

It is difficult to read these words from the prophet Isaiah without hearing echoes of Handel’s Messiah. The words of Advent call us to be prepared for the coming of the King. But are we prepared for this type of King that is indeed to come? In our world dominated by tragic news of wars, torture and abuse do we have ears to hear the coming of the Prince of Peace? Thomas Merton wrote that Advent prepares us for the birth of a great prophet, a Savior and King of Peace – this is much more than seasonal cheer and is a direct challenge to the violence inherent in our cultures.

This Christmas it is our prayer in the WEA that we will not only be a people who can hear words of peace, but more importantly, that we will practice peace in new and extraordinary ways, thus reflecting the character of our Lord. It is our prayer for you also, that just as we hear echoes of Handel’s Messiah in the words of the prophet, that the world will hear and see echoes of peace from the people of God.

May the grace and the peace of Jesus be with you and your communities this Christmas.
