Deerfield, IL – September 19, 2019

On September 16th, around 80 Christian leaders from 24 different countries gathered at the Museum of the Bible in Washington, DC to announce and declare their support for AD 2020 Global Year of the Bible. It is becoming evident that this yearlong emphasis on the Bible is a God-inspired movement because many major Christian denominations and organizations have already endorsed the initiative.

At the gathering, it was agreed that the year of the Bible aims to:

  • Recognize and celebrate the unparalleled role that the Bible has had over two thousand years in the history of the world;
  • Educate and inspire people around the world to study, learn and apply God’s Word through private and public engagement with the Bible;n>
  • Motivate and encourage followers of the God of the Bible to share graciously the Word of God with their neighbors in culturally-appropriate ways.

Bp Efraim Tendero and Dr Lloyd Estrada, speaking at the Launch of AD2020 Global Year of the Bible at the Bible Museum in Washington, D.C.

In endorsing AD 2020 Global Year of the Bible, Bishop Efraim Tendero, General Secretary of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), said: “In contrast to the sacred writings of many other traditions, the Bible is meant to be read and understood by all people. It is not too mystical for people to grasp. It complements the incarnation nature of Christ, because both Christ and the Bible put the knowledge of God within our reach. Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ. If we want to know Christ – if we want to understand the way to God – we must know the Bible. It is God’s chosen means of revealing himself and his will to humanity.”

To help buttress this movement, Dr. Lloyd Estrada, WEA Global Bible Engagement Advocate, said that his team is curating resources that could help enrich the Year of the Bible campaigns in each of the 130 countries where National Evangelical Alliances exist. He expressed WEA’s pledge to collaborate with the Body of Christ in helping accelerate Bible translation, promote Bible distribution, and facilitate educational programs that equip people to read, hear, understand and apply the Word of God.

Bishop Tendero prayed, “May God bless the Global Year of the Bible and magnify our efforts so as to produce great spiritual and cultural renewal in the upcoming year and beyond.”

Over two billion Christians in the world today are represented by three world church bodies. The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) is one of those, serving more than 600 million evangelicals. Launched in 1846 to unite evangelicals worldwide, the WEA continues to be a dynamic movement with 7 regional and 129 national Evangelical Alliances, and over 150 member organizations. WEA's mission is to establish and strengthen regional and national Evangelical Alliances, who in turn enable their national Church to advance the Good News of Jesus Christ and effect personal and community transformation for the glory of God.
