For immediate release from The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada
OTTAWA – On February 22, The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) will appear before the Canadian Senate’s Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs on Parliament Hill in room 160-S, Centre Block, at 2:00 p.m. EFC General Legal Counsel Don Hutchinson will express support for the government’s Bill C-2 provisions which would raise the age of consent to sexual activity with an adult from 14 to 16 years.
“Parents are shocked if they hear that their 14 or 15 year-old child is sexually active with an adult. They are even more shocked when informed, often by police, that under current Canadian law it is legal,” said Hutchinson. “The EFC has advocated to Parliament for years that the law be changed to better protect Canadian children. We reinforced that message when we appeared before the House Standing Committee on Justice last year in connection with the then Bill C-22 and we will state that position again before the Senate Committee in regard to the age of protection provisions of Bill C-2.”
The EFC has appeared numerous times before Parliament on this and related child protection issues, believing that children are among society’s most vulnerable persons. The developing and impressionable nature of children makes them particularly susceptible to sexual predators.
“Canada’s current age of consent to sexual activity with adults is low in comparison to the United States and other countries,” said Hutchinson. “This lower age of consent facilitates an increased level of risk for Canadian children. The proposal to raise the age of consent asserts stronger protection for our children.”
The EFC commends the intent to protect children from adult pedophiles and predators of pubescent youth.
Hutchinson will be available for media interviews on the morning of February 22 and immediately following appearance at the Senate Committee, scheduled for 2 p.m. on February 22.
