Thank you for sharing and praying with the worldwide Micah Challenge community. We hope this email is challenging, inspiring and spurs us on!

Thank you for your understanding and patience during our 2 week break.

How can the overseas visitors be less on the front stage and more supportive of the local church and its ministry? And how can the focus be less on “doing” and more on “being and learning together”?

The attached article offers some concrete steps towards transformational encounters.

Let us reflect on Ephesians 4:1-16.

‘I want you to get out there and walk—better yet, run!—on the road God called you to travel. I don't want any of you sitting around on your hands. I don't want anyone strolling off, down some path that goes nowhere. And mark that you do this with humility and discipline—not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.

You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Everything you are and think and do is permeated with Oneness.

But that doesn't mean you should all look and speak and act the same. Out of the generosity of Christ, each of us is given his own gift….

He handed out gifts of apostle, prophet, evangelist, and pastor-teacher to train Christ's followers in skilled servant work, working within Christ's body, the church, until we're all moving rhythmically and easily with each other, efficient and graceful in response to God's Son, fully mature adults, fully developed within and without, fully alive like Christ….

We take our lead from Christ, who is the source of everything we do. He keeps us in step with each other.

(Excerpts of Ephesians 4 from The Message)

Let us pray:

  • For real “being and learning” from each other’s overseas visits.

If your church or organization is involved in sending or receiving short-term ‘vision’ teams, please use the opportunity to re-assess the real benefits to all participants based on the suggestions in the article.
  • The Third High-Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness ended in Accra, Ghana, yesterday (2-4 September 08).

    We pray that:
    • Representatives of country governments, donor agencies and development banks, international agencies, emerging donors and private foundations will continue to intensify efforts to ensure international aid reaches those most in need.
    • Commitments in Accra will provide overseas aid transparently, free from harmful conditionalities and in a manner that allows citizens to hold donors and recipients to account.
  • In Accra, GCAP (Global Call to Action against Poverty) has launched its 50 days of action on poverty. Please pray for the various actions around key events ending with Micah Sunday on 19 October.
  • Reflecting on the statistic below: Lord, the lack of progress on maternal health issues is depressing! We pray for families who loose their wives, mothers, daughters and sisters at a time that should be a joyful. We pray for a rapid improvement in access to preventative maternal health screening.

Meditate on the Statistics

As you spend time in prayer and reflection, you may like to take a moment to silently understand with your heart the focus statistic we include each week (see below). Our hope is that you will find this series of statistics a useful resource in preparing presentations.

Goal 5: Improve maternal health

Target 6: Reduce by three-quarters, between 1990 and 2015, the number of women who die giving birth

‘Every week, 10,000 women still die from treatable complications of pregnancy and birth.’
