WEA Religious Liberty Prayer Release is to keep you informed and mobilized in prayer and intercession for the needs of justice and religious liberty in the Church around the globe, so that we can stand together for the work of the Kingdom and the healing of the Nations. The Prayer Release is comprised on the basis of different credible Christian based resources.

Murder of Pastor in HONDURAS[i]

 Compass Direct News Service (CDNS) reports that Pastor Carlos Roberto Marroquín, 41, was shot to death by two assailants in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, near his house on February 21st, 2011. Marroquín was the founding pastor of the Pentecostal Church of God in San Pedro Sula, as well as the founder and president of the Christian Legal Fellowship, co-founder of the Latin American Network of Christian Lawyers and president-elect of the Association of Evangelical Pastors in San Pedro Sula. Several sources confirm he has received death treats prior to his assassination. Police is still investigating the case. The murder of the pastor has focused attention on Honduras’ alarming murder rate and the regular threats that Christian workers there receive. According to the report of CDNS Marroquín was the second pastor to be murdered in Honduras this year, after the Jan. 30 killing of Raymundo Fuentes, 43, pastor of the New Jerusalem Temple.

Prayer points:

  •   Pray for Roberto’s wife and his two bereaved daughters  
  •   Pray for protection over Christian workers in Honduras, facing threats and persecution.
  •   Pray for adequate measures against violence on part of the authorities.

Priest facing repeated imprisonment in Vietnam[ii]

 Father Nguyen Van Ly, 64, is a Vietnamese priest who has spent more than 15 years in prison, including time in solitary confinement. His last arrest was in February 2007, when he was detained for distributing material "harmful to the state," and in March 2010, he was released to undergo a year's medical treatment after suffering two serious strokes that left him partially paralyzed. According to the Voice of the Martyrs report, father Nguyen is scheduled to be re-admitted to prison on the 15th of March. He has said that if he is indeed forced to return to prison, he will go on a hunger strike and refuse medical treatment as a means of protesting against the injustice.

Prayer points:

  •   Pray that Father Nguyen Van Ly would not be sent back to prison.
  •   Pray for God’s protection over Vietnamese believers, facing similar persecution.
  •   Pray for true freedom of religion in Vietnam.

Short-term prisoners of conscience in UZBEKISTAN[iii]

Forum 18 News Service reports that the same Tashkent judge who sentenced three Protestant believers in May 2010, have once again sentenced three Protestants to 15-day prison terms on 12th February 2011. Ten other Full Gospel Church members were fined fifty times the minimum monthly wage on charges of holding an "illegal" religious meeting. According to Forum 18, short-term jail sentences of up to fifteen days are frequent punishments for those who conduct religious activity the government disapprove of.

Prayer points:

  •   Pray for the Protestants who were imprisoned during May 2010 and February 2011.
  •   Pray also for the many prisoners of conscience in Uzbekistan, sentenced for exercising their right to freedom of religion or belief.
  •  Pray for the Church in Uzbekistan to stay strong and consolidated in spite of the opposition and persecution.
