Geneva, 16 June 2026 – The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) has submitted a written statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council during its 62nd session, drawing urgent attention to ongoing violence and serious human rights violations in India and Nigeria.
The statement, submitted in the framework of the annual report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlights the impact of sustained violence on vulnerable communities, including violations of the right to life, freedom of religion or belief, the right to property, access to education, and an adequate standard of living.
In particular, the WEA raises concerns regarding the situation in the Manipur region of India, where continued ethno-religious tensions and insecurity have led to killings, displacement, and widespread destruction. The statement documents recent attacks, including the killing of church leaders, and underscores the broader climate of fear and instability affecting communities since the outbreak of violence in 2023.
The WEA also expresses deep concern over the ongoing violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, where attacks on predominantly Christian farming communities have resulted in deaths, mass displacement, and loss of livelihoods. The statement notes the complex drivers of the conflict, including competition over land and resources, environmental pressures, and the proliferation of armed groups, while emphasizing the severe humanitarian consequences for affected populations. In its submission, the WEA calls on the Governments of India and Nigeria to take concrete measures to protect affected communities, ensure accountability for perpetrators, and pursue long-term solutions through dialogue and peaceful engagement.
The WEA further calls on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to strengthen monitoring and reporting on freedom of religion or belief violations, enhance engagement with the concerned governments, and support efforts aimed at prevention, protection, and reconciliation.
Through this submission, the WEA reaffirms its commitment to advocating for human dignity, justice, and the protection of fundamental freedoms, and to amplifying the voices of communities affected by violence and discrimination.
