For Immediate Release

Dear Friends,

As you are aware, the earthquake that rocked Pakistan has left 25,000 – 40,000 dead with many thousands injured. 4 million people are believed to be affected, making it the worst disaster in the history of Pakistan. UN officials described it as unbelievable destruction as never seen before.

There is great suffering in parts of the North Western frontier province, particularly Balakot which appears to have been almost entirely flattered with Azad Jammu and Kashmir being the worst affected areas.

As virtually all Infra structure has been destroyed the injured and the dead are being housed in makeshift camps in the local university and in Muzaffarabad stadium. Reports indicate that there are a number of unaccompanied children who are either orphans or separated from their families.

Roads are gradually being opened and aid has begun to trickle in, reaching the affected areas; still there are some outlying villages which are completely cut off and unreached. There are reports of anger towards the authorities for a perceived slow response.

In this context, the Evangelical fellowship of Asia (EFA) is sending immediate assistance to the affected region, networking with local and International NGO’s.

We have received urgent requests for:

  • Tents
  • Beddings
  • Blankets

There is an immediate need to get these organized, especially with the onset of winter within the next few weeks. EFA is dispatching a container load of blankets, bedding, sleeping bags etc from Sri Lanka to Pakistan with immediate effect.

We are also examining the possibility of sending an assessment and relief team to Pakistan who has experience in emergency disaster management and relief.

If you would like to contribute towards the relief work in Pakistan and are unable to channel funds, the Evangelical Fellowship of Asia is able to offer this service. Your contributions will be sent directly to assist those affected. All EFA accounts are audited and presented to the General Assembly, annually.

You may send in your contributions for Pakistan via a bank transfer.

Devastating Quake in Pakistan: Pray for those in Need

Nearly a week has passed since the devastating 7.6-magnitude earthquake hit Pakistan on Saturday, but corpses are still being recovered from under the rubble of what once were school buildings, homes, entire villages and communities.

According to U.N. estimates, there are 2.5 million people displaced by the quake who will be in need of international assistance to help weather the upcoming winter storms. With little to no access to fresh water, the survivors may also be added to the list of the 30,000 confirmed dead. Government and humanitarian relief workers say their immediate needs are for clean water, food, blankets, and tents.

World Evangelical Alliance partners in the area are working to provide those immediate and longer term needs. The Swedish Mission Alliance, Tearfund UK, and Medair are some of the many WEA associates that have already directed personnel and staff to the Kashmir district of Pakistan – the worst hit part of South Asia.

Please pray for our partners as they give initial assessments on the situation, and for all relief volunteers and staff members who are working against time to save as many as possible. Also pray for the generosity of governments and individuals, so that they may give with alacrity to their brothers and sisters during this tragedy. And most importantly, pray for the survivors of the earthquake, so that they may receive comfort from God as they mourn their many losses.
