World Evangelical Alliance Regional Secretaries Affirm Process for Civic Engagement, Leadership Training, Communications Framework
Top representatives of the World Evangelical Alliance agreed to launch several new initiatives aimed at strengthening the voice and extending the reach of the international body, during a regional secretaries meeting held in San Francisco last week.
The General Secretaries of the Evangelical Alliances of Europe, Asia, Caribbean, Africa, and South America, and the WEA International Director affirmed several new projects, including a global effort to help national alliances develop a document on Evangelical political and civic engagement.
“These strategic meetings were significant in helping WEA develop a road map for some new major initiatives.” said Geoff Tunnicliffe, International Director of the WEA.
The initiative will be spearheaded by Dr. Ron Sider, president of Evangelicals for Social Action and co-author of “A Framework for Evangelical Civic Engagement” — a public policy statement developed for the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) last year. Sider will work with participating national alliances in addressing the respective theological, political, ethnic, geographic, and gender issues of their country as they develop their own framework for Evangelical civic engagement.
Other key highlights of the March 20-22 conference included the decisions to:
— Establish Information Technology support centers within each regional alliance to help build the communication capacity of each region. These support centers will launch under the leadership of Hoan Soo Lee, the Executive Director of the WEA Information Technology Commission, and will help facilitate a globally interconnected intranet and resource-clearing house for the international body.
— Develop a strategy for enhancing the global voice of the WEA by identifying national, regional, and global experts who could best represent the Alliance on specific issues of concern.
— Launch a Leadership Development task force that will help design a strategy for assisting national alliances in building their leadership and governance capacities.
In addition to these initiatives, the regional General Secretaries gave reports on the developments and challenges facing each region, shared fellowship, and learned best practices from one another.
“It is essential that in a globalized world we connect across all the regions of the world. We have much to learn from one another. ” said Tunnicliffe.
