Manila, Philippines – August 10, 2019

In his keynote address at the Jesus Global Youth Day, Bishop Efraim Tendero, Secretary General of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), highlighted the unparalleled role of the Bible in over thousands of years in the history of the world. “Properly understood, the Bible points us to the Creator whose Word is true, righteous and endures forever.” Before thousands of youth and youth leaders from 40 countries, Bishop Tendero launched WEA’s AD 2020 Global Year of the Bible. “We will highlight the importance of the Bible as the enduring foundation for fostering unity, freedom, development and quality of life today and for the years to come,” he added.

Through AD 2020 Global Year of the Bible, evangelical Christians and churches will encourage:

  • the increased and reflective reading of the Bible by individuals and communities all over the world;
  • the translation, publication and distribution of the Bible in as many language communities that need it;
  • supplying people in all areas of life, especially the younger generation, with resources that will facilitate better engagement with the Bible.

The Executive Committee of WEA's International Council also appointed the WEA Bible Engagement Advocacy team, headed by Dr. Lloyd Estrada, as a catalyst in helping National Evangelical Alliances and other WEA member organizations to mobilize evangelicals all over the world in a meaningful celebration of AD 2020 Global Year of the Bible.

However, WEA recognizes that AD 2020 Global Year of the Bible is too huge an undertaking to be handled by just one organization. Therefore, WEA and like-minded institutions and movements like Wycliffe Bible Translators, YWAM, American Bible Society, and Call2All, to name a few, will gather on September 15-16, 2019 to officially announce and roll out this partnership on AD 2020 Global Year of the Bible. This will be held at the newly-built Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C. Soon afterward, it is anticipated that many national announcements and initiatives would begin.

The psalmist declared, “The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever” (Psalms 119:160, ESV). AD 2020 Global Year of the Bible is going to be a year-long emphasis; however, it aims to strengthen the foundation of a lifelong commitment to live by the true and enduring Word of God.

Over two billion Christians in the world today are represented by three world church bodies. The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) is one of those, serving more than 600 million evangelicals. Launched in 1846 to unite evangelicals worldwide, the WEA continues to be a dynamic movement with 7 regional and 129 national Evangelical Alliances, and over 150 member organizations. WEA's mission is to establish and strengthen regional and national Evangelical Alliances, who in turn enable their national Church to advance the Good News of Jesus Christ and effect personal and community transformation for the glory of God.
