The World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) joined the Lausanne Movement (Lausanne) in the celebrations of its 40th anniversary in Switzerland this week. Lausanne continues to be an important partner for the WEA in its mission to unite the body of Christ in furthering God’s Kingdom.
“The historic congress on world evangelization in 1974 and the Lausanne Covenant that was adopted marked a historic milestone in the Church’s effort to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with the whole world,” Dr. Geoff Tunnicliffe said. “We join Lausanne in celebrating the 40th anniversary and giving thanks to God for the influence that this gathering had in uniting Christ’s body for the task of evangelism.”
The Lausanne Committee for World Evangelization (now the Lausanne Movement) that was established following the congress soon became an important partner for the WEA due to the many commonalities in their calling. Many regional and national Evangelical Alliances have hosted Lausanne events over the years and many leaders in the WEA constituency also have a role in Lausanne.
Furthermore, the WEA contributed to the Third Lausanne Congress in Cape Town in 2010 that produced the ‘Cape Town Commitment’ and has since encouraged its constituency to study and adopt this significant document. The WEA has also continued to co-host or contribute to the follow-up consultations that Lausanne organizes coming out of Cape Town.
“We are grateful for the partnership and the significant contribution that Lausanne has made to the global Church,” Dr. Tunnicliffe said. “And looking forward, we wish to considerably strengthen the relationship and find ways to further increase the synergy between the two movements.”
