Prayer and Reflection
Friday November 9, 2007
Thank you for sharing and praying with the worldwide Micah Challenge
community. We hope this email is challenging, inspiring and spurs us on!
Over the coming week we want to join with Tearfund's Global Poverty Prayer
The attached reflection is a creative idea based on the Lord's prayer that
Jesus taught his disciples in Matthew 6. The prayer is placed between
teaching on giving to the needy and money and possessions.
The reflection can be used either as a one-hour ready-to-use session or
individually as creative ideas to slot into a separate prayer meeting
Let us pray:
* From the prayer reflection attached:
And don't let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one (Matt.
'It's tempting to think that we cannot change global poverty. But we can. It's
tempting to think that we can leave it all to someone else. But we can't. In
the quiet, tell God what you're tempted to believe that could get in the way
of your fighting global poverty. It might be selfishness, greed, apathy or
fear. Be honest with God, as well as with yourself. Ask for his help in
resisting these temptations.'
* For Micah Challenge in South Africa. They have organised fantastic
events around Stand up Speak out and are now keen to build on that momentum.
o For continued interest and excitement of the churches that were
o for wisdom for Moss Ntlha, the facilitator of the campaign, and his
team as they continue to build up the campaign.
* Reflecting on the statistic below, please pray:
o For those who face floods or droughts and for those whose lives and
livelihoods are threatened by the destruction of the environment.
o That governments use the International Climate Change Conference in
December to start negotiations on a new set of targets, to replace the Kyoto
Protocol which expires in 2012.
o That Christians will have a positive impact on people and the planet
through their lifestyle choices.
Meditate on the Statistics
As you spend time in prayer and reflection, you may like to take a moment to
silently understand with your heart the focus statistic we include each week
(see below). Our hope is that you will find this series of statistics a useful
resource in preparing presentations.
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Target 9: Integrate the principles of sustainable development into country
policies and programmes and reverse the loss of environmental resources
At the current rate of carbon emissions, global average temperatures will rise
2°C by 2050.
'Once temperature increase rises above 2°C up to 4 billion people could be
experiencing growing water shortages. Agriculture could cease to be viable in
parts of the world, particularly the tropics, and millions more people will
