Welcome! We hope you will enjoy using these reflections with us!
In the church calendar we are staring the season of Lent this week. Lent is seen as a 40 day preparation for Easter and traditionally associated with fasting, prayer and acts of kindness.
Our reflection today shares the 'Lenten series' of Bread for the World, an organisation that is involved in leading Micah Challenge USA. Prepared for a US audience, it encourages US Christians to reflect on poverty issues.
In Deuteronomy 26: 1-13 the people of Israel are given instructions how to celebrate and praise God for his goodness and deliverance out of slavery. But then,
' immediately following this celebration of thanks for the goodness of God, worshippers are required to declare that they have kept the laws of God, specifically singling out the law of the tithe, which in the third year was to be stored as a welfare fund for the poor and needy, the landless and the familyless (V. 12-13).
Vertical thanksgiving for God's goodness must be matched by horizontal action for the needy. My thanks to God for his goodness to me is only acceptable when matched by my determination to do for others what God has done for me.'
(C.J.H. Wright: Old Testament Ethics for the people of God; p.43).
Let us pray:
For a 'vertical and horizontal spirituality' for ourselves and our churches and organisations.
For plans and preparations of Micah Challenge Germany for activities around the G8 in Germany in June.
o Please pray for good ideas and great interest and motivation of German Christians to participate in praying and lobbying for this politically significant event.
o Please pray that the decisions at the G8 will be favourable for the poor.
Please see statistic below: Whereas in some countries people will fast chocolates in this season of Lent, in many countries of this world millions of men, women and children still suffer from hunger.
o Please pray for God's mercy on our world of injustice.
Meditate on the Statistics
As you spend time in prayer and reflection, you may like to take a moment to silently understand with your heart the focus statistic we include each week (see below). Our hope is that you will find this series of statistics a useful resource in preparing presentations.
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Target 2: Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people who suffer from hunger
'Since 1990, global levels of hunger have reduced. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and West Asia, the absolute number of under nourished people has increased.'
