Aid workers killings in AFGHANISTAN

Just a week ago the world news agencies reported about the killing of a team of eye medics, including eight Christian aid workers, in a remote area of Afghanistan on 6th August  2010. The team of two Afghan helpers and eight Christian foreigners worked for the International Assistance Mission (IAM) - non-profit Christian organization, registered as such in Afghanistan since 1966. Investigation by Afghan authorities on who is responsible for the deaths and what have been the motives still continues. According to the Associated Press report a Taliban spokesman said they had killed the aid workers because they were spies and were “preaching Christianity.” The Executive Director of IAM rejected the initial report that the attacks were result of a robbery.  Compass Direct News Service reports that in recent months experts have expressed concern over political threats against local Christians and that the last incidents have the potential to shake the local and foreign Christians in Afghanistan and intimidate them even further.

Prayer points:

  • Pray that the reported incidents might be an impact that strengthens the church in Afghanistan.
  • Pray for courage and peace in the small Christian minority in the country.
  • Pray for the work of IAM in Afghanistan.

Underground church leaders executed in NORTH KOREA

VOM Canada reports that three leaders of an underground house church in Pyungsung county, Pyongan province, North Korea have been executed and 20 of their Christian associates jailed while they were gathered for a "religious function." The arrests and executions happened in mid-May 2010 but the news emerged only recently. VOM Canada additionally reports that the events have also been confirmed by North Korea Intellectual Solidarity, a group of North Korean defectors based in Seoul committed to raising awareness of injustice and promoting reform in their homeland.

Prayer points:
  • Pray for the 20 Christians in prison to stay strong in the face of trial and that they will  be released soon.
  • Pray for wisdom, compassion and the light of the Gospel over those in authority in North Korea.
  • Pray for God’s protection over the Christian minority in North Korea that follow Christ at such a risk and danger.

Eritrean Journalist forced into hiding

A case of concern, reported by the Christian Solidarity Worldwide, UK is about Yonas Embye, an independent Eritrean journalist and a Christian, forced into hiding following threats from an Eritrean diplomat. The reason for his hounding is a weekly one-man protest in Kampala against the imprisonment of journalists in Eritrea, undertaken by Yonas Embye. All these occurrences, as explained by CSW, is due to Eritrea’s aggressive policy towards anyone it regards as a dissident, even outside Eritrea.

Prayer points:

  • Pray for the safety of Yonas Embye.
  • Pray God’s protection over the Christian minority in Eritrea.
  • Pray for just and open policy towards minorities in the country.
