The National Christian Evangelical Alliance of Sri Lanka (NCEASL) is deeply concerned by recent developments in the country, particularly the declaration of a state of emergency and the sudden imposition of an Island-wide curfew.
At a time when the country is facing an unprecedented economic crisis that has caused immense suffering to the people, the suppression of peaceful protest is both insensitive and shortsighted.
The NCEASL urges the government to desist from imposing such restrictions on peaceful protests which is a fundamental right of people. The NCEASL also calls upon the government to heed the people’s voice, revoke the state of emergency and prioritise finding viable solutions to the critical economic challenges facing our nation, including the provision of immediate relief to those most impacted and developing a comprehensive plan of action with experts in the field to resolve the economic crisis. The NCEASL also urges the government to make such plans known to the people so that we, as a nation can positively engage in such measures.
Finally, the NCEASL calls upon the people to exercise their freedom of expression peacefully and constructively and to desist from engaging in any form of violence.
