Gurung of Nepal
The term Gurungs use for themselves is "Tamu". There are conflicting reports as to the origins of the Gurung. Some say their ancestors came from Tibet, while others say their ancestors came from India. Their belief system is complicated. Originally they were shamanists, before being converted to Tibetan Buddhism. Since the advance of the Hindu world into their area in the 18th century, the Gurung have gradually become Hinduized. The Gospel of Christ has encountered strong opposition in the past.
Ministry Obstacles
The majority of Gurung have little concept of who God is and many have never heard the name of Jesus.
Outreach Ideas
Church planters and evangelists from other communities of Nepal have an opportunity to carry the message of Christ to the Gurung people. Pray they will not forget the Gurung.
Pray for the followers of Christ
The Lord is building His church among the communities of Nepal. Pray for the few Gurung who have come to know Jesus, that they will truly become His disciples, following Him with diligence.
Pray for the entire people group
Pray the Gurung community of Nepal will increasingly be told about Jesus, and in their mother tongue. They need to hear the good news of Christ in various formats, and each person needs to hear several times.
