The World Evangelical Alliance expresses its solidarity and full support for the Alliance of Evangelicals in the Central African Republic (AEC) and its former president, Reverend Apostle Nicolas Guerekoyamé Gbangou, who is also a founding member of the Interfaith Peace Platform of the Central African Republic. WEA strongly condemns the attack on Pastor Guerekoyame Gbangou as well as the entire convoy of which he was a part, on June 4, 2021. This attack by armed groups of the Coalition of Patriots of the Central African Republic (CPC) took place during a trip to the south of the country, where the former president of the AEC was participating in a conference of the Elim evangelical churches. All members of the delegation in the convoy were systematically stripped of all their belongings and seven vehicles were set on fire. Fortunately, there were no casualties.
In a statement dated June 6, the AEC “thanks the Lord who preserved the lives of his servants who are on their mission” and “condemns with the utmost rigor all acts of violence by the armed groups of the CPC against the peaceful civilian population and their property, state buildings, NGOs and international organizations that support the efforts of the state to pacify the country.
According to Thomas Schirrmacher, General Secretary of the World Evangelical Alliance, “it is unacceptable that armed groups are targeting civilian populations. By targeting the Reverend Apostle Nicolas Guerekoyamé Gbangou, armed groups have attempted to weaken a voice for peace and justice in the country. I would like to express my full support for Pastor Guerekoyamé, the evangelicals of the Central African Republic, and all the citizens of this country and assure them of my prayers.”
The Global Advocacy Department of the World Evangelical Alliance has echoed the concerns of the Alliance of Evangelicals in the Central African Republic (AEC) since the country has been in the grip of a conflict that has deeply destabilized the country and caused great suffering among the civilian population (https://un.worldea.org/category/country/central-african-republic/). The World Evangelical Alliance has also publicly supported the Interfaith Peace Platform of the Central African Republic, which received the Sergio Vieira de Melo Award in 2015.

L’Alliance évangélique mondiale exprime sa solidarité et son entier soutien envers l’Alliance des Evangéliques en Centrafrique (AEC) et envers son ancien président, le révérend Apôtre Nicolas Guerekoyamé Gbangou, également membre fondateur de la Plateforme des Confession Religieuses de Centrafrique. Elle condamne fermement l’attaque sur le pasteur Guerekoyame Gbangou ainsi que l’ensemble du convoi dont il faisait parti, le 4 juin 2021. Cette agression par des groupes armés de la Coalition des Patriotes de Centrafrique (CPC) a eu lieu lors d’un déplacement dans le Sud du pays, où l’ancien président de l’AEC participait à une conférence des Eglises évangéliques Elim. Tous les membres de la délégation faisant partie de ce convoi ont été systématiquement dépouillés de tous leurs biens et sept véhicules ont été incendiés. Heureusement, aucune victime n’est à déplorer.
Dans un communiqué daté du 6 juin, l’AEC “remercie le Seigneur qui a préservé la vie de ses serviteurs qui sont dans leur mission” et “condamne avec la dernière rigueur toutes exactions des groupes armés de la CPC contre la paisible population civile et leurs biens, les édificies de l’Etat, les ONG et les organismes internationaux qui soutiennent les efforts de l’Etat dans la pacification du pays.”
Selon Thomas Schirrmacher, Secrétaire général de l’Alliance évangélique mondiale, “il est inadmissible que les groupes armés s’en prennent aux populations civiles. En visant le révérend Apôtre Nicolas Guerekoyamé Gbangou, les groupes armés ont tenté d’affaiblir une voix qui s’élève pour la paix et la justice dans le pays. J’aimerais exprimer tout mon soutien au pasteur Guerekoyamé, aux évangéliques de Centrafrique et à l’ensemble des citoyens de ce pays et les assurer de mes prières.”
