In the week in which many Christians in the Middle East celebrate Eastern Christmas, and as the suffering continues for so many in Syria, the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA) notes recent comments by Prince Ghazi of Jordan and Prince Charles of the United Kingdom about the particular plight of Christians there – and in the Middle East as a whole.

The WEA is very grateful for the concerns expressed by the Royal Families of Jordan and the United Kingdom for Christians in the region, and appeals to Christians globally to continue to pray for all the peoples of the region – including the Christians.

"Across the whole of the Middle East, Christian believers are making wonderful contributions to the welfare of their nations, and serving their fellow citizens in innumerable ways. Sadly as the UK’s Prince Charles and Jordan’s Prince Ghazi point out, there is now strong evidence that extremists are damaging centuries of peaceful coexistence and mutual respect," said Gordon Showell-Rogers, Associate Secretary General of the WEA.

Prince Charles said: ‘’We have now reached a crisis where bridges are rapidly being deliberately destroyed by those with a vested interest in doing so. This is achieved through intimidation, false accusation and organized persecution including to the Christian communities in the Middle East at the present time."

The WEA calls upon Christians globally to pray continually for their brothers and sisters in Christ, and for all the people of the region; and WEA calls upon all people of goodwill in the region to work together for the welfare of all their nations’ citizens.
