On 16 November, the military in Zimbabwe placed President Robert Mugabe under house arrest, stating that it was targeting “criminals” around him. The apparent military intervention comes in the wake of the removal of Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week, paving way for Grace Mugabe, the First Lady of Zimbabwe to be the frontrunner to succeed the 93-year-old.
On Sunday, Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu-PF removed Mr. Mugabe as its leader, granting him time until 10.00 GMT on 20 November to resign as president or face impeachment. However, in a national address on Sunday, Mr. Mugabe vowed to continue in power till December.
Mr. Mugabe, the world’s oldest head of State, was elected as Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister in 1980. Since 1987, he has served as the country’s President. However, under the leadership of Mr. Mugabe, for years, the nation has struggled owing to rampant inflation and unemployment and widespread corruption and poverty.
“Let’s pray for Zimbabwe during this important moment. Plagued by socio-economic and political challenges for decades, the current situation could be a catalyst for much-needed change in the nation,” said Godfrey Yogarajah, the Deputy Secretary General of the World Evangelical Alliance.
