Islamist militants issue ultimatum against Christians in Mosul, IRAQ

20 July, Islamist militant group Isis has threatened Christians that they would be killed unless they converted to Islam or paid a protection tax.
According to reports, a statement issued by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isis) was read out at the city’s mosques calling on Christians to comply by midday on 19 July, or face death if they did not leave the city.
The ultimatum cited a historic contract known as “dhimma,” under which non-Muslims in Islamic societies who refuse to convert are offered protection if they pay a fee, called a “jizya”.
“We offer them three choices: Islam; the dhimma contract – involving payment of jizya; if they refuse this they will have nothing but the sword,” the Isis statement said.
Prayer points:
  • Pray for God’s protection over all Christians in Iraq;
  • Pray for members of Isis, that God would soften their hearts and enable them to turn away from all violence;
  • Pray for Christians fleeing Iraq that they would rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance during this time of great distress.
